Invalid Logins

To change Client's handling of invalid login attempts (see Client Overview), click the Client Prefs button, then click the Invalid Logins tab. The following window will appear:

Invalid Logins Pane

The Invalid Logins pane is divided into three areas:

Alarm Sound AreaAlarm Sound

Check the Play Alarm Sound check box to have Client play a sound whenever someone attempts to log in with an invalid username/password combination. Change the sound by selecting the desired one from the popup menu (all System sounds are listed), and adjust the volume of the sound with the slider. Note that the sound volume is relative to the System's sound volume, so if the System is set to Mute, the alarm sound will not be heard; otherwise, the System's actual volume is exactly in the middle of the slider.

Force DelayForce Delay

Check the Force Delay check box to have Client pause for a few seconds whenever someone attempts to log in with an invalid username/password combination. This option is very useful in helping to prevent brute force attacks on a password, especially when an unlimited number of attempts are permitted (see below). To adjust the length of the delay, use the Delay popup menu to select a time between one and ten seconds.

Limit Attempts AreaLimit Attempts

Use the popup menu to set the number of invalid login attempts the Client should permit before it takes action. You can select any number between one and ten, or you can selected Unlimited to allow people to take any number of tries. The radio buttons are used to designate the action Client takes. Go to Sleep causes the Mac to be put to sleep, while Perform Emergency Shutdown causes the Mac to immediately shut down.

Note: Certain types of network situations may cause a sleep command to fail. These most commonly arise when another computer has connected to your Mac via File Sharing, or when your Mac is connected to another computer. It is recommend that you run a test with Client to ensure that it performs as you expect under the conditions in which your normally work.

WARNING: For maximum security, the Perform Emergency Shutdown Command causes an immediate, irreversible shutdown. Other applications are not given a chance to save open documents. Because of this, if you turn this feature on, make sure you're in the habit of always saving open documents in all open applications before letting Client activate. Failing to do so will cause loss of data should someone attempt to break into your Mac. (This is good habit to get into, anyway.)

When the invalid login options are satisfactory, click the Save button to save changes, or click a different tab to switch panes.
