Security Preferences

Special Note: In the unregistered version of SuperLock Pro, the Auto-Activate on Wake-up, Disable Shift Key During Startup, and Apply Soft Lock to Boot Disk features are disabled. These limitations are removed in registered versions.

To set SuperLock Pro's general security options, click the Security button. The following window will appear:

Security Prefs Window

There are a number of options in this window:

  • Auto-Activate on Wake-up: On those Macs that can go to sleep, activating this option will cause Client to automatically be launched when the Mac is awakened. This is an especially useful feature on PowerBooks.
  • Disable Shift Key During Startup: The Mac OS has a feature whereby extensions and control panels can be disabled by holding down the shift key on startup. Activating this feature disables that bypass, thus ensuring that all of your extensions and control panels (and SuperLock Pro) get started properly on startup.
  • Apply Soft Lock to Boot Disk: On shutdown, the boot drive will be locked. This provides a measure of security against people who start up the Mac using a CD or floppy, since they will not in any way be able to modify the contents of the hard drive when doing so. Note that Overseer must be running at shutdown time for this feature to operate.
  • Protect Log File: When active, SuperLock Pro takes steps to protect its log file from tampering.
  • Protect Preferences File: When active, SuperLock Pro takes steps to protect its preferences file from tampering.
  • Protect Users File: When active, SuperLock Pro takes steps to protect its users file from tampering.
  • Activate-Client Hot Key: Allows launching of Client with a keystroke, no matter what program is in front. Use the Set button to change the key combination.
  • Activate After Inactivity: When active, Client will automatically launch after a period of user-inactivity. Use the Activate After menu to specify the time delay.

Note: Some extensions and control panels do not deal with the hard drive being locked. While it is unlocked as early in the startup process as possible to minimize this problem, you may encounter problems. Two common extensions in particular suffer from this: "OpenTp Remote Access" and "OpenTp Remote Access 68k", both part of ARA. Most users don't need these files to use a standard PPP or LAN connection, so if they cause problems for you (which will likely be in the form of the Finder crashing soon after it begins loading), try disabling them and see if everything functions normally for you. If you encounter other incompatible extensions or control panels, please send details to TriVectus support.

WARNING: Be extremely careful activating the soft lock and disable shift features simultaneously. If something goes wrong (namely, a piece of software throws a fit), having both features activated can create quite a jam. We highly recommend that tests be conducted first with just the soft lock activated--to be sure the installed software works well with it--and then with just the disable shift feature active. If all tests go okay, then there is a very good probability that enabling both features will be safe. However, you should still have a way to access the locked disk from a writable volume in the event you can't boot--over a network, via a floppy or CD-R, etc.--so that you can use a special piece of software to unlock the drive. If you encounter problems, please e-mail TriVectus tech support. We'll do what we can to help, but if you've locked yourself out of your drive, we cannot guarantee we'll be able to get you access again, especially if you've not heeded this warning to the letter. In other words, enable both features at your own risk, and only if you absolutely know what you're doing!!

When you've configured the security settings how you wish, click the Save button to exit back to the main window.
